Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables @ Beerthai House Restaurant

And so we're back at Beerthai House Restaurant after a couple of days of western food (aka Astons and Subway meals).

For this trip, I tried to be all healthy and vegetarian. I ordered their Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables which was exactly what the name suggests -- all kinds of vegetables, uhm... stir fried. ;-)
What were the veggies? Let's see... it was mostly Chinese lettuce (or was it just cabbage?) and Chinese broccoli (kai lan) with slices of carrots and the best part? Mushrooms! It was a mix of several types of mushrooms (at least 3) I really don't know the names of.

There's something about stir fried vegetables in Thai cuisine that makes it flavorful enough to not need seafood or pork mixed into it.  They usually have this "sauce" that's really tasty. What is that?

Crispy Fried Fish @ Astons Specialities

They call it Crispy Fried Fish but if you order it with a side of french fries, you can very well call it Fish and Chips. *ignore me, I'm sleepy*

It's huge fillet of fish breaded and deep-fried served with a wedge of lemon, tartar sauce and your choice of two side dishes. As usual, I had the baked potato and coleslaw. I really should get other side dishes next time...

The fish was cooked perfectly through while still maintaining it's crispiness and wasn't as oily as other fried fish dishes out there. For this visit, they served a really big fillet that I was only able to finish two-thirds of the thing. Very filling for SG$7.50.

Note: Excuse the picture please, I took this shot when I was already into my second bite. ;-)

Stir Fried Fish with Green Pepper @ Beerthai House Restaurant

Another Monday with a trip to Beerthai House Restaurant. This time I ordered their Stir Fried Fish with Green Pepper while my lunch buddy ordered their Kailan with Seafood.

The Stir Fried Fish with Green Pepper was basically fish fillets in a spicy red curry-like sauce. It was mixed with some red chilies, green vegetables and herbs that I really didn't recognize. The verdict is it was delicious as always in this restaurant but a tad bit oily looking.

As I mentioned above, my lunch buddy ordered their Kailan with Seafood. Actually, the original dish is supposed to be Kailan with Roast Pork but the people at the restaurant obliged us by taking the pork out and replacing it with seafood. The kailan was served with big sliced red chilies, prawns, squid, fish balls and some odd nuts here and there. It was perfectly seasoned with the sauce very yummy.

Note: We're going to try everything on the menu at this place so expect more entries from this restaurant. And frankly, it's the most decent place to have lunch near our office. I really don't like the food in the hawker centres in the area.

Crispy Cuttlefish @ Beerthai House Restaurant

Ever since I've started my new job, I've probably had lunch at this place half the time. It's a hole-in-a-corner type of place called Beerthai House Restaurant. They serve very good and affordable Thai dishes.

For this trip, I had their Crispy Cuttlefish which wasn't really a one-person kind of serving. It was meant to be shared but I couldn't resist. It is a very simple dish but cooked perfectly and when dipped in their Thai spicy sauce, it was oh so good. I finished half of it while the rest I had doggy-bagged. The dish cost SG$15 (good for 2-3 persons).

My lunch buddy ordered their Mini Thai Steamboat (SG$7) with seafood. It had green vegetables, shrimps, fishballs, squid and rice noodles. A word of advice though, I had a small sip of the soup and it was spicy. For me saying that it was spicy means it IS. I think I have a high tolerance for spicy food so if you're not, best if you let them know to make it less spicy.

Grilled Salmon Fillet @ Astons Specialities

Another lunch trip to Astons Specialities. I had my usual sidings: baked potato and coleslaw but this time I ordered their Grilled Salmon Fillet. The fish was perfectly cooked although the charred top was not to my liking. It didn't feel burnt but more like charred bits that stuck from their griller. I *shudder* to think that might be true. This meal was more expensive than the Grilled Fish (what kind of fish that was, I don't know) at SG$12.50.

My lunch buddy ordered their Crispy Fried Fish which looked really good. It looked like regular fish & chips but the breading more "bread crumby", if you know what I mean. I might order that next time.

Overall, another good meal at Astons.

Grilled Black Pepper Fish @ Astons Specialities

I thought the fish would be flavored with black pepper but in reality it was just grilled fish topped with their "versatile" black pepper sauce. I say versatile with quotation marks because it's a sauce they use over everything else that has "black pepper" on the menu. Before I became pescetarian, I used to enjoy their black pepper chicken -- yep, it's the same sauce. But I'm not complaining, still works well with the fish.

As Astons Specialities is known for, every dish (or most) comes with your choice 2 side dishes. They have a good selection of them divided into: (1) hot side dishes and (2) cold side dishes. You can choose from mashed potatoes or baked potatoes, garden salad or potato salad, to corn on the cob to side vegetables. I personally prefer their baked potato (topped with butter, no other choices) and coleslaw -- as you can see in the photo above. You can have both cold side dishes or both hot side dishes if you want, it's your choice. The main dish costs SG$7.50 which isn't bad at all.
